How to Measure Your Toddler for Their First Bike

How to Measure Your Toddler for Their First Bike

Choosing the right size matters more than colour, brand, or even age recommendations—especially for first-time riders.

The most important check: feet flat on the ground

Your toddler should be able to sit on the seat and place both feet flat on the ground. This helps them scoot confidently and stop easily.

How to measure at home (quick + easy)

  1. Have your toddler stand barefoot with their back against a wall.
  2. Measure from the floor to the inside of their leg (inseam).
  3. Compare that number to the bike’s seat height.

The Little Nation Baby Balance Bike has a 22 cm seat height and 35 cm handle height, designed for tiny riders aged 18–24 months.

Handlebar height matters too

For first rides, lower handlebars are usually easier to reach and steer. Your child should be able to hold the bars comfortably without leaning forward too much.

Signs the bike is the wrong size

  • Tip-toeing instead of flat feet
  • Struggling to get on or off
  • Getting frustrated after the first few tries
  • A “wobbly” look because they can’t ground themselves

FAQ

Should I size up so they grow into it?

For first bikes, it’s usually better to choose the size that fits now. A bike that’s too big can knock confidence early on.

What measurements matter most?

Seat height and your child’s inseam are the main ones. The goal is comfortable sitting with feet flat.

How long will a baby balance bike last?

Many toddlers use a baby balance bike through the 18–24 month stage, then move up when they’re ready for a larger balance bike.
